COMPLETED PROJECTS - THE CELLAR BAR

CP Sound has just completed phase one in an exciting new sound and lighting installation, in the Cellar Club at Reynolds nightclub in Stafford, West Midlands.

The sound rig is entirely JBL. Lighting includes the new Pulsar ChromaRange of colour-changing LED fixtures.

The imitate 150 capacity space - even when empty and trashed by a previous generations of neglect - dripped atmosphere and ambience! It's vaulted ceilings and arched passages snake mysteriously below the ground level of the building. Above are two additional floors which are currently being developed, soon to become an integrated part of what will be a much larger venue.

CP Sound's Colin Pattenden is an avid JBL user, and when it came to designing the sound for the Cellar Club, he had no doubts about what type of system was the best choice. "One of the great things about JBL" he comments "Is that there's a box for every occasion!".

JBL speakers are renowned for being a high quality product, robust and cost effective, providing a continuity of sound - whatever their size. The JBL was supplied to CP Sound by UK distributors Arbiter Pro Audio.

The Cellar's dancefloor area features four JBL MS112 top speakers and two MS125S subs - which kick! The bar is serviced with four of the new JBL Control 29s. To complete the picture, Colin used JBL Control 24 speakers in the toilets, ensuring that clubbers have the same sonic experience whatever they happen to be doing!

Colin is delighted with the acoustics. "The result at the end of the day is that it's one of the best club sounds I've ever designed and installed" he says. This fact is echoed by club manager Dib and owner Paul Reynolds.

For the DJ booth, CP Sound supplied Technics SL1210 turntables and an ALLEN & HEATH Xone 464 DJ/PA mixer, complete with a DENON DN-1800 twin CD player. The mixer was chosen to provide the facility of live microphones when the club has bands playing onstage. Distribution is by a Cloud CX133 zone mixer with a remote control - for operation from the bar area when desired. Amplifiers are all RSE, chosen for their clean power, lack of distortion and no clip factors, thus offering maximum speaker protection.

Colin also designed the lighting. He wanted to retain the natural character of the space, emphasising it's brick arches and it's undulating curvature, and chose the Pulsar Chroma range to illuminate and highlight these architectural elements in the bar.

The arches of the room are down-lit with ChromaHearts, chosen for their multi-colour effects (14.7 million) and impressive 25,000 hour lamp life. Arches inset into the wall run along the length of the space on one side, this naturally splits the room into sections.

The central columns of these sections are lit from four sides with ChromaDomes illuminating the brickwork. The ChromaDomes have ChromaFilters fitted to produce a wide beam effect. They are controlled by two ChromaZone control boxes.

The dance floor is lit with one of CP Sound's versatile club moving light systems, including 8 MAD QScans and 7 MAD QStars. An ANYtronics strobe adds plenty of welly for those burn-out moments, and a JEM Magnum 2000 smoke machine pumps up the fog factor when required! A MAD1 controller located in the DJ booth looks after the dancefloor lighting.

The dancefloor fixtures are divided up between five ceiling areas, delineated by the arches, with the QStars rigged to form two central cluster feature.

Eye-catching neon was supplied to CP Sound by Simply Neon - instigated by designer Steve Howie, who is working on the interiors for the top two sections of Reynolds.

Two signs are 'The New Cellar' red and green. The third neon is custom designed by Howie, and forms a white neon halo for a leather arch, installed and colour-matched to the brickwork. It looks stunning!

The New Cellar is independently owned and continues entrepreneur Paul Reynolds' ventures into late night entertainment. With the top two sections due to complete next year - where CP Sound will also be in action installing sound and lighting - the New Cellar Club is already proving a hit with locals and students.
