COMPLETED PROJECTS - THE CORE

CP Sound has just completed the installation of an innovative new lighting rig plus a stunning re-invention and design of the sound system - incorporating several new elements - at The Core in Yeovil, Somerset.

The club - formally known as Duke's - is owned by locally-based independent operator Terry Clare. The Core has received the major makeover to ensure it is 21st century compatible. Already it's proving to be the coolest must-go nitespot in Yeovil and the surrounding areas.

Steve Howie from Howie Design was commissioned to produce a stunning interior design and visual conceptualisation. He based his themeing on ideas triggered from the complex and visionary world of the cult 1999 Warchowski Brothers movie, The Matrix.

The Core

Audio-wise at the Core, CP Sound's Colin Pattenden rose to the challenging brief of working within a tight budget and utilising as much as possible of the existing installation, whilst also redressing the previous system's serious lack of bass.

Colin dealt spectacularly with this low frequency situation by adding four JBL MS125S cabinets to the room, complete with new RSE PFX 1200 clip control amplifiers. The bass is now up to the requisite levels of 'awesomeness'!

CP Sound also added a DJ monitor - where previously there was none - plus two JBL top cabinets for infill, and another two RSE amps plus a Formula Sound AVC2 limiter.

The whole sound system was rewired and re-balanced by Colin, and now benefiting greatly from new crossovers and graphics, "It sounds like a completely different system" states Colin.

Core Lighting

The lighting installation was designed by Colin Pattenden working with and Ian McLaughlan - and the brief was somewhat more radical than the sound, It needed to evoke a slightly hallucinogenic feel that's both retro and contemporary at the same time!

Over the bars are a series of fibreglass armadillos (for those Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas moments) and in-between each armadillo is a fibreglass pod - six in total. Each pod has a Solar 250 projector with oil wheel behind it, shining through the centre section of the pod - with the effect of making the pod appear to be moving and 'growing' inside.

Opposite the bar are two more pods, with a further four over the dancefloor - each pod with its own Solar 250. Solar 250's are again used with oil wheels over the stairwell and behind a pod in the entrance - producing a liquefying effect. On the stairs, another Solar 250 projects 'The Core' logo onto the wall opposite the club's entrance.

The pyramid shaped roof void above the dancefloor houses the main lighting rig. This was all newly supplied and installed by CP Sound and consists of 8 MAD QScans, 8 MAD QStars, 4 MAD QColours, 4 Abstract VR8s and an ANYtronics 1500 Watt Megastrobe - all controlled by a Pulsar Masterpiece 216 desk. Naturally there is also a highly efficient smoke machine and fan. CP Sound pre-programmed the Masterpiece with several retina-burning lightshows.

Colin Pattenden comments, "It's been a great challenge as well as real fun being involved at the Core. Working with a creative designer like Steve Howie means the technical demands are always interesting, different - and have to be inventive".
