COMPLETED PROJECTS - KINGS COLLEGE

CP Sound were approached by Kings College Ents Manager Pete Metcalf to undertake a complete overhaul and revamping of the system at the Penthouse Club, Camberwell, the venue of the College's School of Medicine and Dentistry. CP Sound had previously completed an installation for Pete Metcalf at Coventry University.

The Penthouse is an expedient sized club venue with a live stage, used for a diversity of applications. Colin Pattenden's first examination revealed badly abused and neglected sound and lighting equipment from the previous installation. It was in a resultant sorry state, in desperate need of TLC. CP Sound advised the provision of a safe, 'fiddle free' sound and lighting system which met all the necessary health and safety requirements ... and this is what they set about doing.

The Bose 802 mid top cabinets were accompanied by Bose 302 bass bins. CP Sound replaced the bass speakers with Eminence 600 Watt drivers (making them into 1200W boxes) and overhauled all the existing amplifiers and drive gear. Driving the bass is a very pokey Chameleon 4000D amplifier, which has been re-housed in a well ventilated box. The 802s, which were completely melted, were replaced by new drivers and are now driven by the PPX 1200s.

The new re-tuned and fully optimised system is awesomely loud! CP Sound also injected new life into The Penthouse's ailing lighting system. Again, they used as much of the venue's existing equipment as possible, including their Light Processor Q24 desk, disco effects, par cans and ANYtronics strobes.

New lighting equipment supplied included four MADScan moving mirror lights, complete with MAD controller plus a completely new power distribution system for all the dimmable and switched channels. The latter consists of internally wired bars and an Andolite patch panel giving the students union the maximum flexibility of a theatrical style patching system.

This makes re-patching of the rig very easy, enabling it to be appropriately for the entertainment on offer - whether it be a live act, disco, cabaret or theatre show.
