COMPLETED PROJECTS - THE WAG CLUB

CP Sound have long been associated with producing superlative audio at London's world famous Wag Club. They set West End trends once again by installing the latest JBL New Sound Power System in a substantial revamp of the club's second floor in September 1997.

CP Sound's Colin Pattenden, together with his colleague Roger Weddup, have provided sound equipment and mixing expertise for many of the high profile live acts to visit the Wag over the last 10 years, including Courtney Pine, Corduroy, Loose Tubes, Curiosity Killed The Cat, The James Taylor Quartet and Swing Out Sister.

CP Sound also installed the previous second floor sound system and have maintained the rig downstairs which caters for some of the live bands.

The structural makeover at the Wag included extension and expansion of the second floor dance area as well as relocation of the bar and fire exits. Colin suggested to Wag owner Tommy McCabe that this would also be an appropriate moment to install a new sound system. This in turn coincided with JBL looking for a near-PLASA venue in which to demonstrate their superlative New Sound Power System during the 1997 PLASA Light & Sound Show, the premier trade show for the entertainment technology industry.

CP Sound seized the unique opportunity to use the latest JBL boxes - hot off the production lines - for its first installation not just in the UK, but anywhere in the world!

The VS 125S 15" dual sub is a folded-horn bass box, an ultra-efficient enclosure and significantly more noise for less power input. The result is a tight, potent, punchy, kick-in-the-chest type of sound. This is complimented by the trouser-flapping resonance of the SP 128S Dual 18" sub bass enclosures that roll rich low frequencies around the room.

The main second floor dance area of the Wag features four JBL SP128S direct radiator dual 18" boxes, and four active 2-way SP222, 2 x 12" mid high boxes, arranged around the square shaped dance floor. The SP 222's resemble a wedge monitor and are ideal for ceiling mounting, as their shape makes them unobtrusive. The main system is driven by four JBL MPX 1200 and one JBL MPX 300 power amplifiers, controlled via a DSC 260 digital controller.

The infill system consists of two SP212-9 mid top cabs and two VS125H folded horn dual 15" cabs. These are controlled by one channel of the DSC 260 which drives another JBL electronic crossover (the M552) which in turn drives one JBL MPX 600 and one MPX 1200 amplifier.

The sound installation progressed with lightening speed. Work started on Monday morning, and the club was ready to open on the Wednesday night.

On first hearing the system, Colin Pattenden declared "This is one of the best systems I have ever heard! The SPL level of the bass cabinets is phenomenal and the tops are crystal clear! Other than that, the speakers look very sexy. It's neat, tidy, powerful and loud with plenty of overhead in reserve!"
